Pennsylvania prison locked down after 3 inmate stabbings

SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) - A state prison in southwestern Pennsylvania has been locked down after three inmates were stabbed in a series of fights.

The Department of Corrections says the State Correctional Institution-Somerset has been locked down since Sunday. Officials say "improvised" weapons were used in some of the stabbings.

The inmates' names haven't been released, and officials haven't announced whether anyone has been charged in any of the stabbings. The inmates have been treated by prison medical staff.

The lockdown was ongoing so guards could conduct an extensive search of the prison for other weapons and contraband.

Visitation and other programs are suspended during the lockdown. Officials expect to lift the lockdown by this weekend.

The medium-security prison for about 1,600 male inmates is about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
