Niles Rally for Recovery celebrates freedom from addiction

Posted: Updated:
NILES, Ohio -

More than 500 people gathered at the Eastwood Field in Niles to walk in the 5th annual ASAP Rally for Recovery.

The ASAP rally is an event that is meant to show that those battling addiction can overcome the disease.

ASAP Project Director Lauren Thorp said treatment does work and people do recover from addiction.

Greg Huss with Foster Living, a recovery house for men transitioning from addiction treatment, said the event is a hopeful one.

"This is the time where all the people in recovery come together. We walk together, we stand together and we are a community," Huss said. "We are a support system for each other. I was addicted to alcohol, cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin."

Thorp said the event, in the end, is supposed to be a celebration of being clean.

"A drug is a drug. It's not about the drug, it is about why you are using, and getting to the root of that. Recovery is something to celebrate, and everyone needs to know about it," Thorpe said.
