YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

An investigation into a reported robbery prompted a lockdown at a Youngstown elementary school Wednesday morning.

Youngstown police tell 21 News that officers were called out shortly before 10 am by a couple who said a man approached them and asked to use their cell phone.

The couple reportedly told police that the suspect then refused to give them their phone back, pulled out a gun, and fired two shots into the air.

The alleged incident was reported to have happened near the intersection of E. Lucius Avenue and Gibson Avenue, just a block away from Taft Elementary School.

Youngstown City Schools spokesperson Denise Dick said the school was placed on lockdown as a precaution, given the proximity of the police investigation.

The lockdown has since been lifted and the school day will continue as planned.

Police say they are investigating the reported incident, however, officers report that no witnesses heard the alleged gunshots.
