YWCA teaches how to take action during unfavorable situation

Posted: Updated:

The YWCA in Youngstown held a free clinic to the teach people what to do if they find their selves in an unfavorable situation.

The Bystander Intervention Training program took place Wednesday night at the YWCA.

The class was meant to empower individuals to use nonviolent principles to diffuse tense situations.

The focus of this class was how to help in a nonviolent way. It encourages people witnessing harassment to take action safely and swiftly.

This training taught participants to understand identity-based violence (i.e. Islamophobia, racism, and gender-based harassment), take ownership and responsibility when a situation arises, learn skills to safely defuse a tense situation, support victims of harassment, abuse, and violence; and be an active participant in reducing violence in the community.
