Austintown school issues warning over fake social media allegations

Posted: Updated:

Austintown Local School District says a student will likely be facing charges in relation to fake allegations posted on social media.

The district sent out a release Thursday afternoon saying that a student had posted a fabricated news story on social media claiming that a district staff member was facing criminal charges.

"The accusations are completely false and the post is completely fictitious," said School Resource Officer Ryan Reese in the release.

A spokesperson for the district says that the student is facing telecommunications harassment charges.

However, as of Thursday afternoon, there was no police record on file for the incident.

In addition, the district's initial release said that students could face the same charges if they repost, or share the fabricated social media post.

The release reads: "You can still be charged for posting, even if you did not create the original story."

However, when questioned by 21 News a district spokesperson responded "In reality, the students will probably not be charged if they repost, but if they are making the same telecommunication with purpose to expose the staff member it could be argued that they are too harassing the staff member. This was basically added to deter the students from reposting."

The district has not released the nature of the fictitious post, or which teacher was the subject of the post.
