50,000 honeybees removed from wall of garage, taken to zoo

CINCINNATI (AP) -

More than 50,000 honeybees that were living inside the wall of a garage have a new home at the Cincinnati Zoo.

The zoo posted a video on Facebook showing the bees being removed by a local beekeeper with a light-suction vacuum. They believe the colony had been in the garage for about 25 years, explaining how it had grown so large.

The beekeeper, Dirk Morgan, also removed the brood, containing eggs and larvae, to ensure the bees won't return.

Zoo director Thane Maynard said the zoo will care for the bees and put them in an observation hive for the public to see. He encouraged people not to call an exterminator for honeybees, but to see instead if someone can move them safely.
