Lawrence County woman killed after tree falls onto her

Lawrence county, Pa -

What appears to be a freak accident leaves an 87-year-old New Castle woman dead.

A large tree branch fell on Audrey Gardiner as she worked on her property Thursday afternoon on Cleland Mill Road.

Her husband says she died doing what she loved most in the world.

Next to the family's home there's a nearly 600 foot path that is not only a nature walk, but a work of art designed by the New Castle woman.

Her husband Gene Gardiner says, "It goes all the way down to the shed down there.  Look at this, she put all of the rocks in there.  This was her life's project, doing this path, isn't that amazing?"

But tragically it's this path that runs next to her home where Audrey was working when a large tree branch fell around 1:30 pm Thursday afternoon, killing her according to her husband of more than 33 years.

"Standing by a tree, a branch next to a tree she was standing by broke off and it was very big around, 32 feet long and hit her on the head and killed her instantly," Gene said.

Gene tried to perform CPR but couldn't get his wife to respond, and he ran into the house to call 911.

He says what's difficult to understand is that just five months ago Audrey broke her hip and was told she most likely wouldn't be able to walk again, but she didn't let that keep her down, she not only walked again she was back out working in her yard and then this happened.

Audrey was a wife, mother to seven children and the grandmother to 55 grandchildren and a woman who let nothing keep her down according to her husband.

"How many women would want to help her husband build a house, we did all the landscaping ourselves, she was involved in all of it, she just loved it," Gene Gardiner said.

So Gene refuses to let this be a tragic story of loss, he says it's really a love story about his angel on earth who is now in heaven, and he's thankful for all the years they had together.
