Keep dogs safe from the harsh heat

Posted: Updated:

With warm weather comes a need to be vigilant about keeping pets safe from the harsh heat.

Jason Cooke, an animal advocate for the State of Ohio, tells 21 News that the following municipalities have ordinances restricting or prohibiting the tethering or penning of dogs during heat advisories or warnings, in addition to other constraints.

  • Poland Village
  • Youngstown - Enforced by the Mahoning County Dog Warden, no weather restrictions, however, individuals are not to have their dogs tethered for more than 60 consecutive minutes at a time.
  • Warren City - Enforced by the Warren City Dog Warden.
  • Girard
  • Struthers
  • Campbell
  • Boardman Township
  • Howland Township
  • Poland Township
  • Liberty Township - Anytime the weather is above 90 degrees.

There are currently heat advisories in place for both Trumbull County and Mahoning County, so these ordinances are in effect today.

Cooke states that all of the above laws are enforced by the local police departments. The language of each of these laws is available through local city council, or in the case of townships, the trustees.

People may also visit Unchain Ohio on Facebook http://https//m.facebook.com/unchainohio/ for a complete list of communities that have tethering laws in place.
