Mother of Niles girl who nearly drowned at Willow Lake says she's recovering

AKRON, Ohio -

Doctors at Akron Children's Hospital gave an 11-year-old Niles girl some good news after she nearly drowned earlier this week.

"How do you drown and live? I mean that girl was completely purple. She wasn't breathing long enough to, you know, die," said Nicole Napolitano of Niles.

Still shocked and thankful her daughter survived, she said it was the scariest moment of her life.

"Her whole face was completely purple. Lips blue," said Napolitano.

Her 11-year-old daughter, Kali McKenzie, was pulled from the waters of Willow Lake in Warren unconscious on Tuesday.

Napolitano said 19-year-old Jake Ouellette of Warren saved her daughter's life.

Napolitano told 21 News, "Without him, she wouldn't be here."

The soon to be Niles Middle School 6th grader was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital where she was put on a ventilator on Tuesday, then flown to Akron Children's. On Friday her ventilator was removed.

She is now recovering and expected to return home soon. Napolitano said the doctors and nurses at the hospital were excellent, and so were the people who helped at Willow Lake.

"I want to thank everybody who helped, that called 911, that tried giving her CPR, that ran back for my shoes, that took my children. Everybody. Thank you," said Napolitano.
