Columbiana taking steps to hire resource officer for next school year

COLUMBIANA, Ohio -

Columbiana Exempted Village School District is taking the necessary steps to hire a school resource officer for the start of 2018-2019 school year.

The district has been working with the Columbiana Police Department to make this happen.

School officials say the position is in progress through the city.

The School Resource Officer will be introduced to students and staff in the district when school starts and will be present in all of the district's buildings.

School officials say the safety of every student and staff member in the district is a top priority.

The school district says they are also implementing other safety upgrades including SchoolSAFEid, a criminal records, and background ID system. The system also prints visitor identification badges for visitors to wear while in school buildings.

Threat Extinguishers are also being installed in buildings.

In the event of a threat, the canisters have the ability to send alerts to school personnel, the school resource officer, and first responders.

The Threat Extinguisher's website says the extinguisher also provides a canister of tactical grade pepper that can be used as a last resort to disable the assailant.
