Grove City man charged after four-hour police standoff

Posted: Updated:
GROVE CITY, Pa. -

A four-hour police standoff ended early Wednesday after police fired tear gas into a Grove City home.

Grove City Police say 44-year-old Shawn Gifford was arrested at around 1:30 a.m. after coming out of his Sunset Avenue home.

Police were called to the home just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after 911 reported receiving a hang-up call from the address.

A woman coming out of the home told police that Gifford was intoxicated and had assaulted her, refusing to let her leave the house.

Gifford appeared on the porch, but after he went back into the home, police called the Mercer County Critical Incident Response Team.

Police got a warrant for Gifford's arrest just after 1 a.m. and released the tear gas into the house, causing Gifford to surrender.

He's been charged with aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, making terroristic threats and harassment.
