Mahoning Sheriff Deputy undergoing surgery after being hit by driver

Posted: Updated:
CANFIELD, Ohio -

A Mahoning County Sheriff's Deputy underwent surgery Wednesday to treat injuries sustained on the job.

According to the Sheriff's Office Deputy Robert Russo was struck by a car last week while directing traffic.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, who is investigating the crash, says Russo was working a detail directing traffic away from the fireworks display at the Tippecanoe Country Club on Canfield.

According to troopers, a driver struck Russo.

The Mahoning Couty Sheriff's Office says Russo was tossed into the air and landed on the pavement.

Major Bill Cappabianca of the Sheriff's Office says Deputy Russo suffered ligament injuries and extensive bruising.

Russo was scheduled to have surgery Wednesday to treat some of the injuries but is expected to make a full recovery.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the case has been forwarded to the Mahoning County Prosecutors office, however, no charges have been filed at this point.

OSP says the driver of the vehicle reported that he did not see Deputy Russo.
