A man wanted for allegedly dragging an Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper with a car after a traffic stop around 11:30 Thursday night, is in jail awaiting arraignment in Youngstown Municipal Court.

The state patrol's dash cam video from a second trooper who had pulled up on the scene is dramatic and heart-stopping when you see Trooper Michael Miller being dragged on the side of the vehicle.

The Canfield Post of the State Highway Patrol says Trooper Miller allegedly pulled over the car driven by Jamel Patton on Kirk Road and Meridian after noticing he was driving without headlights.

When the 22-year-old Youngstown man pulled over Trooper Miller smelled a strong odor of raw and burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Sergeant Patrick Abel with the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Canfield Post says, "At that point, he opened the driver's door and requested that the driver exit the vehicle. He did this numerous times and eventually, the driver refused to cooperate and sped off."

Trooper Miller was obviously in fear for his life according to supervisors and tried to gain control of the suspect.

"At that point, the trooper had one hand on the door handle, and another hand on the driver as he was dragged.  He subsequently was taken 1.7 miles down Kirk Road at speeds that reached up to 70 miles per hour," Sergeant Abel said.

Sources say as Trooper Miller was being dragged he asked the driver to slow down because it's not worth it, and the driver apparently listened and slowed down at least long enough to let the trooper let go and fall into the street.

You see Trooper Miller get up and the state trooper behind him stop to make sure he was okay, but Miller told that second trooper to go get the suspect.

The vehicle the suspect was driving was located by Youngstown Police on LaClede Avenue around 7:30 Friday morning and an army of police joined state troopers throughout the day.

They used a chopper in the air, K9 officers, as well as the U.S. Marshals and local police from Youngstown and other communities, to search various locations for Patton including Brentwood Avenue and Nokomis Drive, as well as homes on Cohasset Drive near Rosedale.

State Police even talked to Patton's family, including his mother who sources say was very cooperative -- all in an effort to get Patton to turn himself in.

It appears the pressure of the police searches and talks with his family worked.  By 2:00 pm suspect Jamel Patton turned himself in with his family by his side.

The suspect was arrested and taken into custody when the Ohio State Highway Patrol officers arrived on the scene.  He was also interviewed at the Austintown Police station before being taken to the Mahoning County Jail.

Sergeant Patrick Abel says the cooperative effort by everyone made a difference in getting the suspect to surrender in this case.

One major question troopers have in this investigation is whether a loaded gun found near the original traffic stop belonged to Patton.

For now, he is facing charges of felonious assault on a police officer, failure to comply with a police order and resisting arrest.

Trooper Miller's back and shoulder injuries are described as minor.  He was treated at the hospital and released and is now recovering at home, according to the state patrol.
