Groups bring awareness during Hunger Action Month

Posted: Updated:

September marks a chance for those across the nation today to pay close attention to the epidemic of hunger.

Thursday marked Hunger Action Day, a special day held during Hunger Action Month.

Throughout the month of September, Feeding America and Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley invite the residents of Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull counties to join Americans across the country to get involved, make a donation, or spread awareness about hunger.

During Hunger Action Day WFMJ Today Anchors Christa Lamendola and Vince Slomsky, as well as Meteorologist Andrew DiPaolo and forecaster Emily Frazzini, as well as 21 News Midday anchor Jennifer Brindisi stopped by the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley to help pack food to be distributed.

Sheetz is also joining in on the efforts to fight hunger.

They announced the company's Made-to-Share program is now providing hunger relief across every state in which Sheetz operates, including Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland. Through weekly food donations to Feeding America member food banks, Sheetz is able to help people struggling with hunger in the local communities Sheetz serves.

"Hunger knows no boundaries, it touches people from all walks of life in every community in the U.S. and in every community Sheetz serves," said Joe Sheetz, President and CEO of Sheetz.

In partnership with Feeding America, the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief organization, Sheetz established a company-wide food donation program donating ready-to-eat food items such as sandwiches, wraps and salads as well as healthy snacking options such as fruit, vegetables and yogurt.
