Eastgate Regional Council of Governments hosts a workshop to set standards on self-driving vehicles

Posted: Updated:

Ohio is taking the next step toward self-driving vehicles.

On November 5 the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments is hosting a workshop from 1-3 p.m to regulate statewide standards for connected and autonomous vehicles.

Autonomous vehicles are currently being tested all over the country and are capable of driving themselves. Connected vehicles use Wi-Fi and other technology to enable communication and data sharing with other connected vehicles, infrastructure, and driver's smartphones.

DriveOhio, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and AECOM will gather at the workshop to make a playbook for the deployment of these vehicles.

DriveOhio is the single point of contact for all of Ohio's smart mobility initiatives and advancements and is currently working on a self-driving shuttle in Columbus and connected highway infrastructure throughout Northeast Ohio.

Supporters of these advancements believe that these projects are not only crucial for the Buckeye state economically, but hope they can also alleviate human error, which is the cause of more than 90 percent of vehicle accidents.
