Special needs 'Winterfest' dance takes place in Girard

Posted: Updated:
GIRARD, Ohio -

It was a night of fun at the Mahoning Country Club in Girard for the annual Special Needs Winterfest.

This winter dance is held specifically for high school age students with physical and developmental disabilities.

Parents were only able to be at the dance during certain times so their teens could interact with others from different schools..

Organizers say this event means the world to these kids.

Jeanne Constantino, East High School Intervention Specialist, told 21 News, "They don't have to worry about anything being wrong with them, because there's nothing wrong with them. In fact, one of my students asked me yesterday, a special needs dance? and I said yes, we all have special needs. There's no one else in this world that doesn't have special needs. They're all different, but we all have special needs.'"

Of course, what better way to ring in the holiday season than with a surprise visit from Santa Claus.
