89-year-old Youngstown woman chases alleged purse snatching burglar

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

An elderly Youngstown woman is being credited with helping track down the suspect who allegedly came into her home and stole her purse.

Police say the 89-year-old woman was at her home on Douglas Avenue Thursday afternoon when a man walked into her kitchen.

A report says the woman screamed at the man to leave, at which point e snatched her purse from the kitchen table and ran out the door.

The police report says the woman took off after the man, chasing him out into the street, where she saw him go into a nearby home.

The woman, who police say was "visibly shaken", was able to tell officers exactly which home the suspect went into and give a detailed description of the burglar.

Police say they could clearly see footprints in the snow leading from the victim's home to the house that she had pointed out.

According to the report, officers went to the home where they found 38-year-old Demetrius Tinker, who "precisely" matched the description of the suspect that the victim gave them.

A report says officers searched the home and found clothes matching what the victim said the burglar was wearing.

Tinker was arrested, and according to the report, told officers that the purse was under a pile of clothes and that he had taken it from the elderly woman's home.

Police say several small bills were found inside Tinker's pocket.

Tinker was taken to the Mahoning County Jail and booked on charges of burglary. An online court docket has not yet been updated with his initial court date.

Police say they were able to return the purse to the woman.
