Police: Smith Twp. man shoots wife's 1-year-old German Shepard after argument

SMITH TOWNSHIP, Mahoning Co., Ohio -

A Smith Township man is in the Mahoning County Jail on charges of animal cruelty.

Police say 43-year-old Jamie Heestand faces one felony charge of cruelty to animals and one charge for shooting a weapon while heavily intoxicated.

According to police, officers were dispatched for reports of shots fired at a home on Alliance-Sebring Road.

A report says officers were told by Heestand's wife that he had been drinking heavily since he got home from work, and that the two of them had been arguing.

The police report says that the woman told officers that she and Heestand had gone to dinner together and had fought on the way home.

The woman allegedly said that she left their home and went to a neighboring relative's house.

While there, the report says she heard several gunshots.

In the report, officers say the woman told them that she feared Heestand had shot her "year and a half old" German Shepard.

Police say they searched the back of the home and found two new shell casings on the porch.

After more searching, the report says police found the German Shepard lying in the bushes near the edge of the property.

Sebring Fire Department was called out to help and were able to get the dog onto a back board and into the woman's car.

From there the dog was taken to an animal hospital where it underwent emergency surgery, but later died.

According to the report, officers searched Heestand's home and found several guns and ammo inside.

Heestand was placed under arrest at which point officer say he became "irate" and began using profane language.

The report says at one point Heestand began to hit his head off of the steel bars of the cruiser partition and say  that he was trying to "make himself look good" in order to prove that the officer had used excessive force.

Heestand reportedly repeated threats to sue the officers and Mahoning County Sheriff's Deputies.

Heestand remains in the Mahoning County Jail on a $15,000 bond.
