Democratic leader pushes for activism in Trumbull County

TRUMBULL COUNTY, OH -

In 2016, the state of Ohio turned red. President Donald Trump won the state over Hillary Clinton. A big part of that was because of the shift by voters in Trumbull County.

Inside Trumbull County Democratic Party Headquarters Thursday night, one party leader was pushing to change that for 2020.

"I really think we need to speak to issues that voters care about," said Geauga County Democratic Party Chairman Janet Carson.

Carson was speaking to a small crowd on the keys to being a strong political activist.

"It's not enough to say we're against Trump or against his policies. It's going to be about what is in it for the voter, what are we offering them that they're not hearing from someplace else. And it really comes down to do they believe us, do they trust us and can we get back to our democratic roots and the philosophies that made this country great," said Carson.

Carson has not made an endorsement for 2020 but says she is excited that Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan is in the running.

"Tim is a wonderful congressman and is terrific with his philosophy and ideas on working class people and making American work well again at living wages and having great health insurance," said Carson.

She says those ideas and values match the Democratic platform.

"We really think that we need somebody from the Midwest to represent this country," she said.

Carson says if they want any chance of turning Trumbull County and the state of Ohio blue again, it means speaking to the issues voters care about.

"If we do that, then we will win," said Carson.
