Man shot and killed walking down the street in Youngstown

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

One man is dead after being shot as he was walking down a sidewalk on Youngstown's North side.

Was it a stray bullet or could he have been targeted?

Detectives say they have no reason to believe that the victim, a man in his 50's was targeted for any reason.

But a major question in this investigation is where did the bullet come from that struck and killed the man?

21 News has learned that the murder victim had stopped at the Belmont Drive-Thru according to an employee at the store and was a regular customer.

He was walking South down Wirt Street near Crandall Avenue with his cousin at about 9:15 Thursday night when a gunshot rang out.

The victim according to the witness, stumbled, then fell face down on the sidewalk and stopped breathing.

Sources say the bullet appears to have struck him from behind.

The victim has been identified, but his name has not been released publicly.  He was taken to St. Elizabeth's Health Center where he died.

Sources say detectives were canvassing businesses in the area looking for surveillance video that might give them an idea of where the shot came from.

But investigators have no reason to believe the victim was targeted.
