Niles School renewal levy returning to ballots this fall

Posted: Updated:
NILES, Ohio -

The Niles City School District announced Wednesday there will be no cuts, at least for now.

The district also announced it will once again be turning to voters for a 10-year renewal levy this fall.

The school board says this time it's going to change its approach to get voters to understand the levy's impact.

The school board says it is hopeful that the financial recovery plan it approved at Wednesday's meeting, combined with better voter outreach, will allow the district to pass the levy and avoid some very painful cuts and expense hikes.

The proposed 10-year renewal levy failed during last Tuesday's elections.

"We need to communicate that this is money that we're already currently paying in our taxes," said Ann Marie Thigpen, Niles City Schools superintendent, said "We struggle a bit because we have been on the ballot prior to this election and the substitute levy for new dollars so there may be some confusion there."

The board says it hopes to get residents involved in a levy committee as a way to dispel that confusion.

As part of the approved financial recovery plan, four retiring teachers will not be replaced. There are also healthcare savings and cuts agreed to by the teachers' and classified union.
