Saying they are “fans of all things groovy,” the makers of Ben & Jerry's ice creams say they hope to make CBD-infused ice cream as soon as it is legal on the federal level.

While CBD, or cannabidiol, is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana plant. However, CBD by itself, it does not cause a “high.”

While CBD is being touted for several health benefits, according to Harvard Medical School, there is scientific evidence that CBD may be useful in treating some childhood epilepsy syndromes.

CBD is legal in Pennsylvania, but not in Ohio. State Senator Sean O'Brien is a co-sponsor of Senate Bill 57 which would decriminalize hemp and license hemp cultivation.

The Food and Drug Administration is taking public comment on legalizing CBD-infused foods.

“We’re doing this for our fans,” said Ben & Jerry’s CEO Matthew McCarthy. “We’ve listened and brought them everything from Non-Dairy indulgences to on-the-go portions with our Pint Slices. We aspire to love our fans more than they love us and we want to give them what they’re looking for in a Ben & Jerry’s way.”
