11-year-old Champion Township speed skater hosting unique fundraiser for Adult and Teen Challenge

Posted: Updated:
CHAMPION TWP., Ohio -

Did you know one of the best young inline and ice speed skaters in the country is from Trumbull County?

Kyle Kolat has an incredible future ahead of him, and if you blink, you just might miss him!

"He's super quick," said Kyle's father, Bernard. "I mean he just broke his personal best record. He was running 10.4's 10.5's in 100m sprint and this past weekend he broke it to 9.9 seconds."

Kyle is a national champion speed skater who's competed at the highest level since breaking into the sport six years ago.

"He's won national championships and American championships. He just picked up a corporate sponsor, Anabolix Skate Company. It's been unreal," said Bernard. "He's got over 400 medals and trophies."

Kyle is ranked sixth in the country and can reach speeds up to 43 miles an hour.

"It's super intense. I mean, it's an adrenaline rush. I think that's what he likes so much about it," said Bernard.

"There is a lot of technique in it because if you don't have the technique, you might fall flat on your face," said Kyle.

Next month, Kyle will strap on his helmet and race in the USA Rollersports National Championships. Before that, though, his custom skates have him taking a road more heavily traveled. On June 24th, Kyle is going to skate from Northern Bristol Township to the Kent State Trumbull Campus in Champion. It's about an 18-mile journey. He's doing it as a fundraiser called Roll 2 Recovery. Money raised is going to the Ohio Valley Adult and Teen Challenge.

"So I can help the people that are addicted to them and maybe they'll get better," said Kyle.

Spencer Kilgore who is the Operations Coordinator for Adult and Teen Challenge said it's neat seeing young people help others.

"I can quickly tell that he is an exceptional young man because I don't know too many 11-year-olds that want to raise money for a non-profit, so it was really neat to be able to get to meet him and get to know his family. I think it's super admirable what he's doing," said Kilgore.

A GoFundMe has been set up for donations. You can click it here. Kyle's goal is $5,000.

"I want people to donate. It doesn't matter how much money but anything helps," said Kyle.

Kyle's skate will begin at 8:30 am on June 24, and his father says he should do it within an hour. Everyone is invited to the parking lot of Kent State - Trumbull to celebrate the journey. A DJ will be on hand, and Kyle will be available to sign autographs.

Who knows, we might see Kyle Kolat on the U.S. Olympic team some day.
