Dept. of Health warns PA residents about ticks, mosquitoes

HARRISBURG, Pa. -

Summer is here and with it come summer bugs that could have an impact on your health.

According to a release from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus and ticks that carry Lyme disease are found across the state.

The Department of Health is urging residents to protect themselves against these bugs by knowing the potential symptoms associated with Lyme disease and West Nile virus.

Some symptoms to monitor if you have been bit by a tick are:

  • Red swollen bulls-eye shaped rash
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Swollen lymph nodes

The release says that ticks are found in shrubs, weeds and tall grasses but can also be in other areas.

Some symptoms of West Nile virus are:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Body aches
  • Joint pains
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash

Some more severe symptoms of West Nile include brain swelling, meningitis, coma and paralysis.

130 human cases of West Nile were reported in Pennsylvania last year while the state lead the nation in cases of Lyme disease in 2018 with approximately 10,000.

The Department of Health says that residents should always monitor their symptoms and check pets and children for ticks and other insects.
