'All clear' sounded for all courthouses in Downtown Youngstown after search

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

The Mahoning County Courthouse and U.S. District Courthouse in downtown Youngstown have been given the all-clear after being searched by law enforcement agencies.

According to law enforcement officials, agents from the Youngstown Police Department Bomb Squad and several other agencies have searched the Mahoning County Courthouse and the federal courthouse, both situated on Market Street.

While the courthouses will remain closed to the public Friday, officials say no threat was found.

Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene says that shortly before 10 a.m. an unidentified individual called into Austintown Police Dispatch stating that four "detonation devices" had been placed inside of 120 Market Street- the address of the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Also, the suspect allegedly said that another explosive device had been placed ion the "courthouse across the street," but did not specify whether the referred to the U.S. District Courthouse or the Youngstown Municipal Court on Front Street.

Greene said that officials shut down all three courthouses and began evacuations.

Just after 10 a.m. a second call, apparently from the same individual, was called into Austintown Dispatch requesting a ransom of $100,000.

Greene said the individual mentioned that the devices would detonate at 12:01 p.m.

The Sheriff's Office, U.S. Marshals, and the Youngstown Police Department Bomb Squad were dispatched to the courthouses and began searching.

Greene said that a bomb-sniffing dog was called in from Stark County to assist.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security deployed one of their bomb-sniffing dogs to search the federal courthouse.

Greene said officials searched the buildings several times but found no detonation devices and waited out the 12:01 p.m. detonation time.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. officials said the Youngstown Municipal Court Annex building on Front Street had also been cleared.

According to Sheriff Greene, multiple detectives are working on the case and are being assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the ATF.

Greene says they a "looking at a couple of people" who may be involved.

"With social media the way it is now and the way we're going as a nation you'd be hard-pressed not to take these seriously," Greene said.

"It's not going to be tolerated," Greene remarked. "Especially if we find out who it is we will prosecute to the fullest."

Market Street was blocked off for several hours but has since reopened.

Officials say all three courthouses will remain closed for the rest of the day. Business is expected to return to normal Monday morning.

Approximately 150 people were evacuated from the Mahoning County Courthouse. Officials say they do not have a toll of how many people may have been evacuated from the federal district court or the Youngstown Municipal Court.
