Keystone Safari in Grove City, Pennsylvania opened to the public less than a year ago but have already welcomed many new animals into the facility.

According to the release, a Barbary Lion cub was born May 19.

Barbary Lions have been extinct in their native lands, the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, since at least the 1960s.

The parent lions, named June and Cash, moved to the facility from New Castle's Living Treasures Wild Animal Park in 2018. They had lived there since 2006.

Barbary lions were sought after and hunted for their heavy build and impressive manes and became famous after being used in gladiator games in Rome.

The lions became a popular sight at early zoos, preserving their genetics.

Fewer than 100 Barbary lions are thought to be alive in zoos today. Their numbers are believed to have been near 200,000 only a century ago.

The new cub, named Simba, weighed in at a healthy three pounds at birth and has grown to nearly 12 pounds.

Simba spent his first six weeks in the den with his mother and has recently started exploring his habitat with his mother and father.

He enjoys clumsily pouncing and playing with his parents.
