LIBERTY TWP, Ohio -

Bond is set at $1 million for a man who was shot by a police officer during an attempted armed bank robbery in Liberty.

Twenty-three-year-old Dabraylin Hawkins of Youngstown appeared for video arraignment Monday in Girard Municipal Court where he faces charges of aggravated robbery, felonious assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

Liberty Police Officer George Bednar told investigators that he exchanged gunfire with Hawkins during an alleged robbery attempt at the Home Savings branch on Belmont Avenue last Thursday. Bednar wasn't injured.

When police caught up with the suspect a short distance away from the bank, Hawkins said he was injured and was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment.

Officer Bednar has been placed on paid administrative leave - which is protocol is any officer-involved shooting.

The Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation processed the crime scene and will investigate the officer-involved shooting aspect of the case.

Liberty Township Police and the FBI are investigating the attempted armed robbery.
