Three days of music, food, health, heritage underway in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

The Mahoning Valley's 400-year commemoration of the arrival of the first Africans to North America kicks off in Youngstown Friday with a series of events including a Party on the Plaza.

This weekend the Valley is marking the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans to English North America in Jamestown, Va. In 1619.

In preparation for the weekend, the following street closures are in effect from Thursday, August 8th from 6 p.m. until Monday, August 12th at 6 a.m.: East Federal Street between Market Street and Champion Street.

The Party on the Plaza is scheduled Friday, August 9, 2019, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on East Federal Street as part of downtown Youngstown's annual outdoor music series.

This week's headliner will be nationally renowned Producer & Rapper Luke Nasty. Also performing are T.D.G, Black Kaspa, Ace 500, Dajsha Doll, J.Howell, Em'effes, Qwann Sugick, and Breezy Bayb.

The event is hosted by Lisette Elena with sounds from DJ Kid Lou and DJ Get It.

The parties are designed to be family and pet-friendly so treats will be available for all ages and even your four-legged friends.

At 7 a.m. on Saturday, August 10, the annual African American Male Wellness Initiative Mahoning Valley 5K Walk/Run steps off at the Covelli Centre on Front Street. People can participate free of charge.

The 400th Aniversary of African slaves arriving in America has three days of events beginning at 9 a.m. Friday with a Youth Entrepreneurs Business Fair at 20 Federal Plaza.

A festival begins on Federal Plaza East at 11 a.m. Friday and resumes at noon Saturday.

The festivities wrap up Sunday night with a Gospel Gala on Federal Plaza East.

    Two Boardman teens were charged after they allegedly hopped the fence and were caught in a restricted area of the Akron Children's Hospital parking lot.  According to a police report, the two 17-year-old boys were seen scaling the hospital's fence at around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
