Two East Palestine lifeguards save two young children from drowning

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio -

Two young lifeguards in East Palestine are being credited with saving two young children from drowning.

It happened on Saturday at the East Palestine community pool.

Shantel Springer and Morgan Rutlege helped rescued a boy and girl from the pool.

They were visiting with their grandmother when the children got into the deep end and couldn't stay above water.

"It was definitely scary to watch. I swam as fast as I could and got to her on time; so everything turned out good," said Shantel.

Marlania added saying that parents should know where their kids are at all times.

"Try to keep a close eye on your kids, especially on a busy day, because you never know when something is going to happen," said Marlania.

Both lifeguards say they've had similar instances like this happen this year.

They say they've both probably rescued seven or eight children so far this season alone and that parents or guardians should always be watching.

Two people on Lordstown council now want to set limits on any tax abatement given to any new business. Robert Bond and Karen Jones introduced the resolution.  They say due to Lordstown's location to highways, businesses don't need any added incentive to come to the village and residents are missing out on potential tax revenue. ...More >>
