Columbiana couple creates custom coloring books

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIANA, Ohio -

Look at the menu at Sundog Cellars, or a growler at Birdfish Brewing.  If the cider or beer doesn't catch your eye, this art will.

In fact, the labels and logos sprinkled through Columbiana are custom made by a married couple, the founders of Rat Creative.

Renee McRoberts, an art teacher, draws custom designs on an iPad, then her husband Dan McRoberts finishes the images with graphic design.

"It is a culmination of her art and just the fact that we are working in black and white," said Dan.

They prefer to let others add some color to their business, standing out as one of the only companies known for custom coloring books in Columbiana.

"The one that we were most excited about was the Birdfish coloring book.  It was the first one. We just got a list of every beer and event Birdfish does, and we drew a bunch of pictures for it," Renee said.

The coloring books are unique in the fact; they will draw a portrait of a friend or family member into the pages of the coloring books.

They've done several portraits so far, including 21 News meteorologist Andrew Dipaolo, posing in an astronaut suit for the launch of Sundog Cellar's DiPaolo XIII mango cider.

"There's a weather map, and we try to do news graphics on it a little bit, and he's there holding his astronaut helmet," Renee said.

Rat Creative can even put your face on a placemat for birthday parties, or do a full coloring book for big events.

But the niche for the coloring books seems to be small businesses, offering a unique way to promote local brands.

"Instead of scrolling through and looking at a Facebook post, actually sitting there and watching someone or coloring it yourself and if it says Birdfish or Sundog at the bottom, I think you'll think about it more," said Dan McRoberts.

The next step for the business? Custom animation

They also hope to expand to more places in the Valley and open up a location.

But the coloring pages are still their favorite. Making art so that others can paint a masterpiece of their own.
