Columbiana County voters reject abortion, marijuana issues

It was clear in the early voting that Issue 1 on reproduction rights and Issue 2 on recreational marijuana was headed toward approval in the state.

21 News political analyst Bill Binning was the first to call both issues, projecting early that both would pass.

Issue 1 passed with more than 56 percent of the vote, while Issue 2 passed with more than 56.5 percent of the vote Tuesday.

How did the people of the Valley vote on both issues?

In Mahoning County, 42,079 (56.22%) voters approved of the ballot issue, while 32,765 (43.78%) voted against the measure.

Trumbull County, both issues passed, with more voting to approve reproductive rights and recreational marijuana. On Issue 1, 36,647 (57.33%) approved and 27,279 (42.67%) were against the ballot issue. On Issue 2, approval numbers dropped to 33,885 (52.95%) for, and 30,151 (47.08%) against.

Columbiana County, voters rejected Issue 1 by a margin of 56.15 percent, with 13,969 voting for the ballot issue and 17,888 against. Issue 2 was a closer vote, but still not approved, receiving 15,319 yes votes (48.34%), and 16,372 (51.66%) no votes.

Ohio became the 24th state to allow adult cannabis use for non-medical purposes. The new law will allow adults 21 and over to buy and possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and to grow plants at home. A 10% tax will be imposed on purchases, to be spent on administrative costs, addiction treatment, municipalities with dispensaries and social equity and jobs programs supporting the industry itself.
