Choffin unveils advanced manufacturing lab to train students for in-demand jobs

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

A new state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing lab is now open at Choffin Career and Technical Center, giving students in Youngstown the opportunity to train for high-demand jobs in robotics, automation and industrial maintenance.

The program, developed in partnership with the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition, transforms what was once an elective course into a full career and technical education program. The lab can serve up to 80 juniors and seniors each year.

“This is all geared toward the future of technology,” said Alex Hertzer, executive director of the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition. “Every company, from local brands to Ultium Cells, needs that level of technician that can troubleshoot and critically think. And if we can’t fill that gap fast enough, we aren’t going to be able to keep up with business needs.”

Students will start with the basics, including hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical wiring, and then advance to programming robots commonly found in industrial settings. The goal is for students to graduate with industry-recognized certifications and real-world skills that can lead directly to jobs in the Valley.

“Industry needs our kids, and we’re trying to make manufacturing as attractive as possible,” said Mike Saville, director of Choffin Career and Technical Center. “We give them the base, and then we grow them into skills that earn certifications so they are ready for the workforce once they leave here after senior year.”

Instructor Jim Alexi said the investment into the new lab is significant, with close to $1 million in equipment brought together from three different programs. “One of the things we tell students is you’re not just preparing for a job—you’re preparing for a career that can support a family,” Alexi said.

The lab’s launch underscores the growing importance of manufacturing in the region. By connecting students with local employers for mentorships and internships, leaders say it builds a direct pipeline from classroom to career.
