STRUTHERS Ahead of the home game for Struthers City Schools on Friday, alumni of a student-run radio station at the school were honored for their part in the station.
Pete Pirone, Superintendent of Struthers City Schools, met with 21 News at the ceremony, which marks the beginning of a weekend-long celebration of the WKTL station reaching its 60th anniversary.
One member of the WKTL alumni included in the recognition ceremony was Bob "Bubba" Meluch, a 21 News photographer.
WKTL got its start in 1965, and Pirone says that this radio station has made an impact on the student community.
"I think there have been a lot of people that have gone on into broadcasting over the years... The pride in the radio station for the Mahoning Valley to have WKTL 90.7 still in our area is important," said Pirone.
Pirone added during a 21 News at 5 interview on Friday that although the times have changed and broadcasting has shifted more online, students are still able to be involved in the functions of the radio station.
"We still do our football games every week, and our students serve as sideline reporters during the games," said Pirone.
The station continues to broadcast in partnership with The Summit radio station based out of Akron.
In addition to the recognition ceremony on Friday, the celebration will continue on Saturday with station tours from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The station is located at the Struthers Memorial Field House, 111 Euclid Avenue in Struthers.
The Struthers Rotary Club will then host guests for coffee and donuts at Mauthe Park, 174 Smithfield Street.
