2000: McDonald Steel Corp. promotes executive vice president Thomas Kantor to president and chief operating officer. 

Warren names Capt. John Mandopoulos was appointed the city's next police chief after earning the highest scores on the oral and written tests. 

Darlene St. George, a Howland Township trustee since 1993 and former director of Children's Rainbow Preschool and Kindergarten, was hired by Liberty Township trustees as Liberty's township administrator. 

 

1985: Youngstown Mayor Patrick Ungaro is apparently reconsidering his request that City Council grant raises of $8,900 for himself and $16,500 each for both of his top aides. 

Crews for the A.P. O'Horo Co. are tearing down the Himrod Avenue Bridge, a major link between downtown and Youngstown's East Side. The $3.5 million project is expected to be completed by June 1987.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources approves a drilling permit to convert a gas well in Hartford Township in Trumbull County into a brine disposal well.

 

1975: All United Airlines flights serving the Youngstown Municipal Airport are canceled, inconveniencing hundreds of passengers scheduled on 15  daily flights as part of a nationwide strike. 

A vast area of the South Side is shaken when an explosive device is detonated on the roof of the newly remodeled Booby Trap lounge at 2426 Market St. in Youngstown. 

Massillon  ministers, outraged by the arson deaths of three firemen  at a restaurant owned by a racket figure's wife, are demanding efforts to "stop lawlessness and crush the power of organized crime."

 

1950: General Motors and Ford announce price increases for their 1951 models of about 5 percent. Of the Big Three automakers, only Chrysler, which will launch its new models in January,  hasn't increased prices. Several smaller carmakers have also announced increases. 

John W. Turnbull, former Youngstown chief of police, is named director of public relations and safety for Century Food Markets Co., and Lymon Houlton is named controller. 

Earl C. Kilroy of  Newton Falls is named chairman of the Trumbull County Civilian Defense Corp.
