AKRON, Ohio- Valley businessman J.J. Cafaro was led into court Monday wearing shackles and an orange jumpsuit for his detention hearing.
Judge John A. Adams agreed to release Cafaro, pending his sentencing in June, but he will be required to wear GPS monitoring to ensure that he does not leave the district.
Cafaro was taken into custody at a hearing last Wednesday after he refused to disclose financial information to the court on the advice of his attorney.
He later agreed to disclose the financial information, but a motion to have the detention hearing moved up to Friday was denied.
Cafaro pleaded guilty last week to providing false information to the government about financial contributions he made to the congressional campaign of his daughter, Capri.
On campaign financial documents, Cafaro only reported contributing $2,000 to the campaign, but did not disclose an additional $10,000 in the form of a loan to an unnamed staffer.
Under the terms of his plea agreement, prosecutors recommend that he receive probation up to six months in prison, but the judge could sentence him for as much as five years.
