4-year-old Newton Falls boy dies of gunshot wound

NEWTON FALLS, Ohio- Newton Falls police are investigating how a gun went off in a Newton Falls house Tuesday, killing a 4-year-old boy.

Newton Falls dispatch received a 911 call just after 5 p.m. from a hysterical female reporting that a boy had been shot.

The child, who was the son of Michael and Amanda Stewart, was found dead at the house on Trumbull Court.

Police chief John Kuivila said the investigation is still open and would not confirm whether the child had shot himself.

"All we have at this point is a 4-year-old child that was shot with a .410 calibre pistol weapon or revolver, which is basically a shotgun-type shell that comes through that weapon directly to the chest. At this point, everything's still under investigation," Kuivila said.

Police are working with BCI and the sheriff's department to piece together exactly what happened, but investigators said the believe the shooting was accidental.
