CANTON, Ohio - An SUV goes left of center killing four people including three from one family in Salem.
Sunday afternoon at 1:46 p.m. a call comes in from Tuscarawas County to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Three minutes later, at 1:49 p.m., another caller reports a man heading North on State Route 800 driving erratically just crossing the Stark County line.
Four minutes after the second call, at 1:53 p.m., a SUV goes left of center cutting a Mercury Marquis in half.
Inside that car was five-year-old Kira Goudy. The five-year-old was wearing a seat belt, but was still thrown from the car and died at the scene. She had not yet started school.
Also in the car was eight-year-old Alex Goudy from Salem. He was cut out of the car by Canton Township Fire and Rescue and later died at the hospital.
The children's grandfather, 61-year-old Bruce Goudy from North Canton, also lost his life in the accident.
The Ohio Highway Patrol says an autopsy may reveal why the driver of the SUV, 83-year-old Peter C. Mingo from Canton, drove his vehicle across the center killing three members of one family.
The Superintendent of West Branch Schools, Scott Weingart, says Alex will be missed. Weingart tells 21 News that classes do not begin until after Labor Day, but counselors are available to work with teachers and staff who are mourning the loss of Alex. He said counselors will also be available to help students who are returning to Damascus Elementary on September 8th.
