UPDATED: One man dead after armed robbery attempt at Youngstown fish market

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A man is dead following an armed robbery on Youngstown's north side.

At around 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, a man walked into Galaxy Seafood on Belmont Avenue and demanded money from the cashier. The cashier gave money to the suspect who soon found out he and the cashier weren't the only people in the store. An off duty Youngstown police officer was working security there at the time.

Witnesses at the scene say it was Officer Mike Walker. "An individual male came inside conducted a robbery at the register. I believe this individual was unaware there was an officer inside. The officer confronted the subject and shots were fired," said Youngstown Chief of Detectives Captain Rod Foley.

Police won't say how many shots were fired or if the suspect fired a shot, only that the suspect did have a gun.

Police say the suspect was taken to Saint Elizabeth Health Center, but soon died from his injuries.

The owners of the store says t he officer saved the day and they don't understand why someone in the community would target them. "This is a good fish market. It's my family's fish market. It's a shame, we're good to people around here; we're always helping people out around here and this is the thanks we get," said Clemate Franklin whose family owns Galaxy Seafood.

The Mahoning County Coroner's office has identified the suspect as 32-year-old Warren Wright of Youngstown.  Officer Walker and the cashier were not injured during the robbery.

Internal affairs is investigating the shooting as is required whenever an officer uses their firearm.
