UPDATED: Canfield High School student dies in one car crash

CANFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio -  A 17-year-old Canfield High School student is dead after the SUV he was riding in crashed on Leffingwell Road, just west of Raccoon Road in Canfield.

Kevin Kolesar was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth's Hospital shortly after the crash that happened at around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday night.  Kolesar was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 17-year-old Benjamin A. Streb.

Lieutenant Chris Heverly, the Commander of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Post in Canfield says both of the teenagers were wearing their seatbelts, but Streb was conscious and walking around at the scene.  But it's the passenger side of the vehicle that took the brunt of the impact, "The vehicle traveled off the right side of the road for a distance and then struck about three trees.  The vehicle came to rest in the yard of a home on Leffingwell Road."

A traffic reconstructionist from the State Patrol was back out at the scene on Friday trying to reconstruct what happened.  It's unclear if speed played a role in the crash at this point and State Troopers say the driver was asked to submit to a blood test that will be analyzed by the crime lab to determine if alcohol or any other factors were involved.

Canfield High School administrators say counselors were availabe at the school on Friday for any classmates who needed to talk.  Kolesar is described as a very pleasant young man who was always polite and a hard worker.

No charges have been filed in the accident at this point.
