Experts offer car care tips for extreme heat

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio-High temps not only take a toll on people and animals, they can also push a vehicle past its limits.

According to AAA, hot weather can be more damaging to your car than cold weather.

Parking out of the sun, when possible, helps protect your car from damage inside and out.

A hot interior makes your air conditioner work harder reducing it's life expectancy and scorching sun on the outside can actually zap the life from batteries.

AAA advises that you should try to keep your car parked in the shade at all times or in your garage and keep it protected from excessive heat because it could prematurely drain a battery.

Kevin Carzoo, the service manager from Sweeney Chevrolet said maintaining your car's cooling system is very important this time of year. That means getting the system flushed and changed every five years.

Checking the oil and other fluids to make sure they are filled to the appropriate levels is also essential in keeping the engine cool and properly lubricated.

Excessive heat where the rubber meets the road can also be a problem.

That's why Car Pros advises that tires shouldn't be filled with hot air.  According to Carzoo, "what works for tires if you get nitrogen put in them you don't get that fluctuation in them excessive heat excessive moisture will create corrosion around the rims which cause them to leak then you get premature wear out of the tires."

Nitrogen eliminates the moisture that goes into the tire.

Many car dealers and auto repair shops provide nitrogen for all your tires for about $20.
