2 water main breaks in Cortland on Sunday

CORTLAND, Ohio - A Cortland neighborhood went without water for hours on Sunday.

Two separate water main breaks kept city crews busy all morning and well into the afternoon.

When Don DeWitt walked outside this morning, he saw an unusual sight. "Water was just bubbling up from the ground, between the sidewalks and the edge of the road. Water just bubbling up, about three, four inches of water," DeWitt said.

Crews were called to Stahl Avenue, just off of East Main Street, to repair the water main break. In the meantime, water service was shut off to the entire neighborhood.

A few hours later, another water main broke in the same neighborhood.

Neighbors say crews have been working on water lines for more than a month. "When it's done, it's going to be great. But nobody realized we were going to go through this. There's like 65 houses back here and everybody's just in awe," said resident Joe Sturgeon.

"There's some more water all over the yards. We had water run into our garage and basement. It's good that the neighborhood kind of pitched in and everybody's helping each other shore up the driveways so that way we don't have too much water damage," said resident David Bush.

Cortland Mayor Curt Moll says the city has experienced several similar water main breaks over the past few weeks. Since the city put a new water tank into service, water pressure has increased. That was the desired result of the project, but the increased water pressure is straining old pipes while new pipes are being installed.

Construction on the new water lines on Stahl Avenue is expected to be completed within two weeks.

Water service was restored to the neighborhood around 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
