GIRARD, Ohio - Storms tore through the Valley Sunday morning and afternoon, some areas even seeing a tornado.
Ron Ochoa says that's what he saw at Churchill and Shannon Roads in Girard. "There was a funnel cloud coming across Shannon. Two different funnel clouds, one close to me and one coming down this direction right here; this road. It was like a washout with counter clockwise rotation," Ochoa said.
"Eyewitnesses have stated that a tornado touched down starting about in Girard Cemetery progressing east through Tod Park and continuing on Park Avenue almost through a straight degree through Shannon Road," said Girard Mayor Joseph Melfi.
Amy Sowers who lives on North Ward Avenue is not sure what hit her neighborhood, but she's just glad that her family is safe. "We were in our bedroom and we heard the rain coming down and my husband said, ‘Get to the basement.' And as we passed, our shed was on our car," Sowers said.
The storm's high winds sheared utility poles and uprooted trees causing them to topple over, some onto power lines and others onto streets forcing several roads to be closed off until the debris could be removed.
"Police, fire, street department have responded very quickly. We already have one road open. Dominion is here. Ohio Edison is on the way," Melfi said.
Whether or not one or more tornadoes touched down on Girard's north side will be determined by the National Weather Service.
While there is severe damage, Mayor Melfi is relieved to report that there were no injuries. "That's a good thing, because obviously we had a lot of flying debris. A lot of cars are damaged, so we're very pleased that no one was hurt," Melfi said.
A meteorologist from the National Weather Service will be in Girard on Monday to asess the storm damage and determine if it was caused by a tornado.
The first round of storms that came through this morning only caused some roadways to fill with high water.
Parts of Mahoning Avenue on the city's west side saw some high water.
The storms then moved into Pennsylvania hitting Mercer and Lawrence counties with heavy rain. Hard rains flooded roadways at Butler Avenue and downtown New Castle at South Mill Street. No damage has been reported.
