CORTLAND, Ohio - A preschool assistant teacher is dead after a head-on crash in Trumbull County.

The victim has been identified as 22-year-old, Rachel L. Davis of Cortland, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Trooper from the Warren Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol say Davis was killed at approximately 6:35 p.m. when her 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier veered left of center on State Route 5, running head-on into a tractor trailer driven by 46-year-old Rohan Powell of Ontario, Canada.

Davis, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Powell was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center in Warren where he was treated and released.

Davis was a teacher at the Kiddie Day Care and Preschool on North River Road in Warren for more than three years, will be deeply missed according to coworkers and friends.

Laura Hicks is the Administrator at Kiddie Day Care and Preschool, "It was hard to walk in the door this morning knowing that she wouldn't be here to bring the life and the smile. She had a bright smile. As soon as she smiled, everyone else smiled."

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating to try and determine exactly why the Cortland woman's car traveled into on-coming traffic.

Sergeant Philip Robinson says, "We just know that she was leaving her residence and possibly going to a relative's residence. But possibly in between we really don't know what happened at this point. It's still under investigation."

Because Davis was alone in her vehicle, State Troopers say we may never know exactly what caused Davis to go left of center. But those who knew and loved her say they'll just never be the same,

"Oh, she will be definitely missed, greatly, by parents, by children, by staff, by all of us. She was a friend. Like I said we're all like sisters here, so it will be hard for all of us for a while," Hicks said.
