Eye Care Associates surgeons use lasers to perform cataract surgeries

BOARDMAN, Ohio - Cloudy, blurred vision. That's pretty much the norm for the roughly 22 million Americans living with cataracts.

"Patients with cataracts typically have trouble with many different we call 'activities of daily living'.  They have trouble driving, reading or trouble with hobbies that they do, say sewing or golf and we can with cataract surgery eliminate those problems," said Dr. Keith Wilson with Eye Care Associates.

At The Center for Advanced Eye Surgery at Eye Care Associates in Boardman, surgeons like Dr. Wilson are able to perform more precise cataract procedures.

The practice recently purchased a LenSx laser, which makes the incisions so doctors don't have to, and allows them to then go in and remove the cataract by hand and replace it with a new lens.

"We feel we're better able to achieve our goal of providing good vision without dependency on glasses either for distance and many cases for near as well," said Dr. Wilson.

The procedure takes about a half hour. Dr. Wilson says many patients will notice significant improvement that same day. For the Center, which performs nearly 3,000 cataract procedures per year, this new technique is proving to be the clear choice.

"Just in the few weeks that we've been using the laser we've seen tremendous excitement among the patients who learn about the new technology and we think that this is going to be a very popular option for patients," said Dr. Wilson.
