Worker's torch may have started Garrettsville fire

GARRETTSVILLE, Ohio - Fire officials have revealed a prelminary cause of the fire that raged through thirteen businesses in the center of Garrettsville on Saturday.

Investigators say that a roofer's torch may have started the the blaze on a 150-year-old building that was in the process of being renovated.

The Garrettsville Fire chief says the age of several buildings leveled by the fire may have contributed to the blaze spreading so quickly.

34 fire departments, including several from Trumbull County helped fight the fire.

The Garrettsville Chamber of Commerce is coordinating efforts to help people impacted by the fire. 

The Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard was leveled by the flames. To replenish the cupboard's supplies, non-perishable food items and household supplies are being accepted at The Weekly Villager building (8088 Main Street).

Food donations can be delivered to Rick Patrick's Auto Service and Sales, 10320 Brosius Road Monday through Friday from the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 PM with the exception of noon to 1:00 PM until a more permanent building is acquired.

Monetary donations can be made at Middlefield Banking Company.

Girl Scout Troop 91010 is collecting non perishable food items to help rebuild the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard. Kristen Bailey will to pick up any an all donations. Please contact her at kamcie1027@gmail.com.

Cub Scout Pack 62 of Garrettsville will be collecting non perishable food items at IGA and Save-a-Lot Sunday March 23 and Monday March 24 from 4-7 PM.

The Mental Health & Recovery Board at 155 E. Main St., Kent is collecting non perishable food items Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5 PM. They will take donations to the Weekly Villager.
