Purported Youngstown street gang member murdered in Warren

Authorities in Warren have identified the victim of Tuesday night's fatal shooting as a man named in an indictment as a Youngstown street gang member.

22-year-old Deon Sanders was shot in the chest outside a home at 228 Forest Street Northeast. The Trumbull County Coroner has ruled the death a homicide.

Although authorities told 21 News that they don't believe the shooting was gang related, an indictment handed up by the Mahoning County Grand jury in 2012 identified Sanders as a member of the H Block gang, which Youngstown police say was responsible for street and property crimes.

Sanders pleaded guilty to robbery charges last year and was scheduled to be sentenced next month.  Last month, a Mahoning County judge issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Sanders, ordering that when taken into custody, he would be held without bond.

Police had taken what they describe as a person of interest into custody for questioning. No one has been charged in connection with the murder.
