Niles company where worker was killed cited for safety violations in the past

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says a Niles Company that was the scene of an apparent accident that claimed the life of an employee has been cited for safety violations in the past.

Daniel Banks, 49, of Leavittsburg died Tuesday night following an incident at BRT Extrusions at the Niles Commerce Park on North Main Street.

Dispatchers were told that a man who sustained a head injury from a piece of machinery was not moving.

The victim was transported to Saint Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

OSHA had two investigators questioning potential witnesses and company managers Wednesday morning.

OSHA spokesperson Scott Allen tells 21 News that the aluminum extrusion company was cited in 2007 for having inadequate protection on machinery, and in 2009 for failing to have a guard on machinery.

BRT Extrusions Human Resources Manager Jim Metheny said that their thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victim.

Metheny also said that the company is cooperating fully with the OSHA investigation into the accident.
