Deputy injured in three car crash on 224 in Canfield

Four people were sent to the hospital after a three vehicle crash that backed up traffic on State Route 224 in Canfield for nearly two hours Tuesday.
The cruiser was heavily damaged in the crash, that also involved a sedan and SUV, near the intersection with Hillside Drive at 2:43 p.m.
The sheriff's office said that Deputy John Tomaino Jr. has non-life threatening injuries. At last check, an OSP officer said that Tomaino was being taken into surgery and had contusions and lacerations to his face. He was reportedly up and moving around after the crash.
The patrol states in a media release that Andrea Elberty, 47, of Canfield was operating the SUV and Lothar Link, 88, of Canfield was driving the sedan with his passenger Sofia Froom, 82, of Canfield. They were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, according to the patrol. No word on their conditions at this time.
OSP Sergeant Brad Bucey said "the sheriff's deputy was responding to a backup call from Canfield Police Department, came through the intersection with lights and sirens. Another vehicle, this white GMC, was heading south (on Hillside Drive) and they collided."
Bucey said that the impact pushed the cruiser into the sedan that was sitting at the intersection.
According to the patrol, Tomaino was responding to a back-up call from Canfield Police in reference to a subject with a warrant.
The crash is still under investigation.
Five minutes later on State Route 224 at Fairground Boulevard, there was another accident involving a deputy who was responding to the previous crash.
OSP stated that Deputy John Boggs was traveling south on Fairground Boulevard and 32-year-old Christina Lokash was driving a sedan east on State Route 224.
According to the Highway Patrol, there were minor injuries reported at the scene and neither party was transported.
This accident also remains under investigation.
Both reports will be forwarded to the county prosecutor's office to determine if any charges will be filed.
