The Mahoning County coroner has identified the woman who died in an accident on Interstate 680 Monday morning.Twenty-year-old, Nicole Baird of Youngstown, died instantly from massive head injuries after being struck by a car near the Shirley Road/Indianola exit.
According to her Facebook page, Baird studied at Struthers High School.
Authorities say Baird had exited her car along the left side of the interstate to remove a lawn bag from under her car. Baird's car was then struck by another vehicle.
Baird was thrown over the divider and struck by a third vehicle, which then fled.
A close family friend tells 21 News that Baird was two months pregnant and would have made a great mother.
"Such a wonderful person. Smiling all the time, a ray of sunshine. I just seen her last night, you know, and it's like wow, like a bad nightmare, I can't wake up," said Robert Reeber.
Both southbound lanes were closed between South Avenue and Midlothian Boulevard until 9:00 a.m. The road was closed while an accident reconstruction team from the Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
Authorities are trying to locate the hit and run vehicle. Police say they are very few witnesses. Investigators ask anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call them at 330-742-8946.
