Elm Road (State Route 5) in Bazetta Township has reopened after a car accident involving a propane tanker.

Officers with the fire department say shortly before 7 a.m. a car slammed into a privately contracted tanker carrying propane.

Authorities say a valve on the propane truck was damaged during the accident and began leaking a small amount of propane.

Trumbull County Hazmat team was on the scene helping to suppress the gas leak using water to eradicate the gas.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Division has authorized Bazetta Fire Department to remove the tanker and reopen the roadway for traffic.

Captain Dave Walter of the Bazetta Township Fire Department issued a statement shortly after 8 a.m. that business on Elm Road were closed while crews worked to contain the gas leak.

Businesses on Elm Rd between Millenium Road and Burnett Drive will be allowed to open once traffic begins flowing.

Authorities say the evacuation and closure of businesses on Elm Road was a necessary precaution as they work to stop the leak.

One person was injured in the accident and was transferred to the hospital. The identity or condition of that victim is not known at this time.

Bazetta Fire and Police Departments, The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Cortland Police Department, and the Trumbull County Sheriff Department worked to clear the accident and the gas leak.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will be investigating what may have caused the accident.
